Hi Allan.
There are around five definitions of this phrasal verb.
The first is the one you mentioned, to leave a hotel or private hospital after paying the bill.
The second definition is to examine someone or something in order to be certain that everything is correct, true, or satisfactory.
Some examples:
The police are checking the woman out.
I’ve been taking loads of photographs, just to check out the camera.
Go to the doctor and get yourself checked out.
The next one is a bit informal. It means to look at someone or something to see whether you like them.
Example: Have you checked out the local sports centre yet?
Another definition is that if information checks out, you feel that it is true after examining it.
Example: Their story just didn’t check out.
You can also use check out as an informal way to say "look at".
Example: Check out the crazy hair on that guy!
Finally, in American English, you can use check out to pay for your goods before leaving a supermarket or other large shop, or to borrow a book from a library.
