Both the reading and the lecture are about the decline in reading literature, which occurs in particular among young people. The author of the reading believes that it leads to disadvantage, while the lecturer disagrees.
First of all, the author points out that with the reduce of reading literature we do not take advantage of many benefits. It is mentioned that only literature stimulates our imagination and improves our knowledge of the language. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that not only literature offers intellectual stimulation. Furthermore, she argues that also history and science books are creative and well-written. As a result, they provide high-quality of stimulation.
Secondly, the author contends that instead of reading literature people prefer to read stupid novel or to watch TV or to listen to music. The article notes that these kind of entertainment do not improve the level of culture of the people. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that there is lot of potential in music and movies. She elaborates on this by mentioning that culture has changed, and so now there are different way to express it more directly.
Finally, the author states that although there are many brilliant authors, it is hard to publish books because of the lack of investment due to the small audience. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that it is author's fault. She puts forth the idea that they write in a old-fashioned English that is difficult to understand.
