Who am I, chapped liver? I'm studying English expressions and it's so funny because some phrases are easy to understand and to use day by day. I learned this one - "Who am I, Chopped liver?" ha ha ha. What this expression means? Yes, it means "Am I not important?" or "Don't you like me?" or "Did you forget me?". In Portuguese the translation is very strange. If I say this, well, nobody understands me. But, of course, there are expressions in Portuguese with the same meaning. If my best friend forgot me to invite to a party I could say her in English - "Who am I, chopped liver?" ha ha ha.

Do you mean Who am I chopped liver instead of chapped liver?

Very interesting to know the origin of this expression Don McIntosh. And I agree. This phrase signifies frustration. Thanks :)

I guess it`s because many people do not like liver, and chopped liver, even less. Actually, I found this explanation in Wikipedia: Since eating chopped liver may not be appreciated by everyone, the Jewish English expression "What am I, chopped liver?", signifies frustration or anger at being ignored on a social level. An alternative explanation for the etymology of the "What am I, chopped liver?" expression is that chopped liver was traditionally served as a side dish rather than a main course. The phrase, therefore may have originally meant to express a feeling of being overlooked, as a "side dish."

I think this expression is a bit old-fashioned. Also, it's usually "What am I, chopped liver?" rather than "Who am I..."
