Is prom worth the cost?
A promenade dance, most commonly called a prom, is a semi-formal dance of high school students. This tradition is widely distributed all over the world, but it is the most popular in the United States. Prom has advantages, as well as disadvantages. According to those, an every student should decide for himself about participation in such kind of events. It depends on many personal factors, but, in my opinion, it doesn't worth it.
One the one hand, there are many positive reasons for prom. Basically, for many students high school is a place, where they spent four years of their lives. In most cases, people get used to school during this time. In some sense, it is the high point of student's life and a ritualised transition from childhood to adulthood. Also, it is a great opportunity for students to relax and spend time with friends after hard work for months of study. For many people it could be the last event they attend with their high school friends.
One the other hand, proms have lots of disadvantages. First of all, it is very expensive. According to statistics, the average household spend about $1,100 on prom-related experience. The major reason for that is the popularity of social media. That is why every student wants to look perfect. Another negative consequence is teens more likely to be involved in a car accident, during the prom season. A third of alcohol-related teen traffic fatalities occur between April and June, which is considered the peak of prom season. Those reasons incline me to a negative perception of prom.
It worth mentioning a few things that have an impact on popularity of prom. First, popular movies and novels attest to the importance of prom themes. Then, an impact of previous generations to current generation. According to the tradition, this generation will tell the next generation about importance of prom. Also, prom important for economy, because there is an entire industry based of renting formal costumes to prom attendees, renting limousines or buses.
Many historians believe that proms may have existed at colleges as early as the late 19th century. In spite of the long history, prom does not lost its popularity and continues to be a notable celebration in the social climate of high schools. Moreover, year by year it becomes more common. There are pros and cons of attending proms. As I said early, I don't think that it worth it. You can have a good time with company of close friends or family.
