Tian Ji -- The Horse Racing Here is a famous story in Chinese history. There was a senior official in State Qi during the early Warring States period (4th century BC) of Chinese history, whose name is Tian Ji. He liked horse racing very much. One day, Tian Ji and the King agreed to play horse racing. They classed their horses to three groups according to their ability，First- class horses, Second-class horses and Third-class horses. The rules of the game were, 1. Each horse could only take part in one race; 2. Only one horse could be selected as a representative of each group; 3. After three competitions, the winner of two times finally would win the game. The game started, and Tian Ji chose a First- class horse to fight the king’s First- class horse. The king's horse ran faster than Tian Ji's horse, so the king won the first game. The next two games are the same. The King’s horse is faster than Tian Ji’s. So in this game, Tian Ji finally lost. Tian Ji was very upset because he lost the game. Sun Bin who was a retainer kept by Tianji at his residence told to him, “I have seen the game, your horse in every level just a little more slowly than the king’s”. Tian Ji said yes in an unhappy voice. Sun Bin said, “I can help you to win the game”. Tian Ji said, “Can you? Do you have some better horses?” Sun Bin said, “We will not change the horse”. Tian Ji said, “Then I will lose again”. Sun Bin said, “ Just do it follow my advice” Meanwhile, the king is The king is enchanted by the joy of victory. When he saw Tian Ji and went back, the king said, ”do you still refuse to lose?” “No, I don’t,” said Tian Ji. “Then let's play again.”，said the king. After the sound of gongs and drums, the game started again. Sun Bin asked Tian Ji to use his Third-class horse to fight the king’s First- class horse. So they lost the first game. Then Sun Bin asked Tian Ji to use his First- class horse to fight the king’s Second-class horse. They won. The King began to get nervous. In the third match, Tian Ji used his Second-class horse to fight the king's Third-class horse. They won again. Now the king was so surprised that he could only keep his eyes wide open and cannot say anything. The result is Tian Ji won the game, and the king lost the game. Used the same horses but change the order, then Sun Bin turn lose to win. Later, the king asked Sun Bin to be the general of the State of Qi, and Sun Bin became one of the most famous generals in ancient China.
