Hi there, I have a question about the pronunciation of “probably”. Do people usually drop the syllabus in the middle( i.e. bə ) and then it sounds like /ˈpräbəl/) especially in American English? Thanks!

Yes, in America, it’s very common for people to drop the middle syllable in “probably”. I haven’t checked, but that’s probably not the pronunciation in the dictionary. An even more relaxed pronunciation is “prolly”. Never *write* that — of course :) Note that a commonly used synonym for “probably” is “(most) likely”, which in American English can be used as an adjective or an adverb.

American/Canadian answer: New Oxford American dictionary probably [ ˈprɑbəbli, ˈprɑbli ] The first vowel is the same as the “a” in father and water and the “o” in bomb. [ˈprɑbəbli] prah-buh-blee [ˈprɑbli] prah-blee In casual speech, three-syllable words lose the middle vowel if it’s a schwa. family: fa/mi/ly (formal) >> fam/ly (casual) every: e/ve/ry (formal) >> ev/ry (casual) probably: pro/ba/bly (formal) >> prob/bly >> pro/bly [ˈprɑbli] (casual)

Phil is correct, we often drop the middle syllable in normal conversation. However, many of us would put it back in if we were giving a presentation at work, school, etc.
