I have been trying to learn Japanese for quite some time now, but find it difficult to have conversations. I try to translate everything from English to Japanese, and then get lost. Any suggestions? I have been taking classes at college or community center over a few years, but not consecutively & I lack so much vocabulary. I feel so lost.

I've been learning Japanese for 7 years now, and I can tell you that conversation skills will click eventually; it takes a lot of practice and patience. A lot of people online will say you absolutely have to stop translating and "just start thinking in your target language," which is very hard to do in the beginning, especially if you haven't studied a second language before.
If you are already having conversations in Japanese, keep doing that, and try to speak every day as much as you can. I also recommend watching kids' anime like Chibi no Mariko-chan, Anpanman, Doraemon, or Japanese dubs of your own favorite kids' shows like Bluey or Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. These kinds of shows use simple language and have visual aids so it's easier to understand. If it feels below your level, good; that means you'll be able to understand most of it and you'll get more out of it (grammatical intuition via exposure, new vocab). If you want more of a challenge, read a manga or watch a slightly harder show like Spongebob or Avatar the Last Airbender. Just watch something you enjoy that you can watch without subtitles for an hour a day (more or less, or whatever you can), and it should help you speak with more confidence. The most important thing is consistency and having fun, so don't give up!
Hope this is the kind of advice you were looking for. Thanks for reading!
