What does "break new ground " mean ? Is it similar to make big progress ?

"To break new ground" means to do something that hasn't been done before. The implication is that the ground has lain untouched by human hands and that someone is "breaking the ground" for some "new" purpose. Einstein was a pioneer who broke new ground in the field of theoretical physics.

the Chinese meaning of the phrase is quite plain and clear , that's "开辟新天地", which may be similar to "create or open a business, a new start or something like that" , I think
