what does "rebound relationship" mean ?

I've heard it many times in movies, series etc, i get the general meaning but not the exact..

I know that a rebound relationship is the one after the woman or the man has just broken up with his/her bf/gf/spouse...
but what does it mean exactly?

rebound is metaphorically when we have again the chance of doing sth that we've failed in that before.. so a rebound relationship is kinda chance of a new relationship? an up-and-coming beginning ?
or it's just to have a good time and that's all?

You are correct, but the metaphor also carries the idea of randomness. In basketball, a rebound might go anywhere.

You also here terms like 'he's on the rebound', meaning his recent (serious) relationship has ended so he's now looking for something casual to take his mind off it and help him move on.
