What's the difference between Language and Idiom?

In the ESL world an 'idiom' is usually an expression or saying that you can't deduce the meaning of just by looking at it as a whole or by examining the words individually. For example: My Uncle kicked the bucket last night(My Uncle died last night)

I am not sure what the problem is.. I do not believe in 'wrong" questions. After the last answers, I hope I am not very wrong! I would say a language is a system of verbal and written communication (most often, but sometimes with the body - smoke signals or some other mechanism.) Idioms, I would say are alterations in language with concepts and sentence structure specific to a culture and sometimes a region.
