Bemerken (bemerkt) or merken (gemerkt)?
Can anyone help with which is the correct form of ‘to notice’ to use in the following sentence;
‘He noticed a little dog’
‘Er hat einen kleinen Hund bemerkt’
However, my tutor corrected this to ‘gemerkt’ which she said was because the sentence needed to be ‘transitive’.
I’m new to German so my knowledge is not yet that good, but I understand a transitive verb needs an object to make sense, whereas a non transitive doesn’t.
I think that my sentence is ‘transitive’ as it needs ‘the dog’ to make sense.
However, I thought that ‘bemerkt’ was transitive and ‘gemerkt’ non transitive (the opposite to what my tutor is saying?)
It seems I’m getting something wrong here as my tutor obviously has more knowledge than I do and hope that someone can help explain to me where I'm getting this wrong?
Vielen Dank, Gem

Your right. Your teacher is false. It dont make sense when you write : Er hat einen kleinen Hund gemerkt.

Of cause your teacher is wrong.
Merken is rather to realize. You wouldn't say: I realized a small dog.
Ich habe gemerkt, dass es kälter geworden ist, Ich habe gemerkt, dass mein Schuh offen ist... (ok, here you could use "to notice, too)
But merken you use normally with a secundary sentence, bemerken with a noun.

That really depends what you mean by "notice". The word has a number of equivalents in German, not just "merken" or "bemerken".
1. If you just became aware of the dog then you would say "merken".
2. If you started observing the dog you would say "bemerken".
I presume he was going his merry way when he noticed (became aware) the dog. The stuff about transitive or intransitive is irrelevant here. Both verbs are transitive.

"merken" is also transitive, people just don't use "gemerkt" here.
