Flaky vs Eccentric SCRIPT If you want to buffer the blow of calling your friend an odd-ball, don’t say she’s flaky — say she’s eccentric. QUESTION What's the difference between flaky and eccentric? I couldn't understand even after I read that script above. More like a slang vs like a formal? Please help me. Thanks!

This is how I perceive these two words. Flaky - In this script, the word flaky was used as a slang word. When you're describing someone as a flaky character, it means that they're wild and crazy. This doesn't mean that someone is actually mentally crazy, but their personality/opinion/etc is quite out there. There's another way to use the word "flaky" and this is another slang. When someone is unreliable, you can call them flaky. For example: "John said he was gonna show up at 5pm. It's 5:30pm and he's still not here. What a flaky guy (you can also say "what a flake!")." Eccentric: when you're describing someone as eccentric, you also think they're crazy and strange. BUT the difference nowadays is that the word "eccentric" is used in a rather positive way. Young Americans these days value individuality and being a little eccentric by dressing differently, listening to cool underground music and having an interesting hobby nobody else has. This word is less harsh than the word "flake" and often has a positive undertone. Examples: Natasha is flaky! - makes it sound as if Natasha is really out there and crazy Natasha is eccentric! -makes it sound as if Natasha is cool and different.

1- Well, "flakey" in US is a slang which means eccentric; crazy; odd. So: - "that slightly flakey quality, in joy as well as in grief, that prepares us subtly for the mad scenes to come" :D from :(Village Voice). 2- but "eccentric" is deviating or departing from convention, esp in a bizarre manner; irregular or odd. In fact, a flake is somebody who can't "keep his shit together" ;D. He (or she) is not clearly concentrated or focused on what he is doing, which therefore makes him undependable or unreliable, or strange.

The joke is that poor people are crazy, but the rich are merely eccentric. In describing people, the word eccentric is used for foibles ranging from mild to bizarre. Flaky, when referring to people, means insubstantial in character, unreliable, not serious. Yes, flaky is more of a slang word.
