As for making movies, "shot" or "to shoot" has a special meaning.
The place where a movie is shot is the place where the movie was filmed. A lot of Chinese movies are shot in Beijing. This means the movies were filmed in Beijing.
Shot here is past tense of shoot, like shoot a gun; but in this case the phrase is "shoot a movie."
"I am going to Beijing to shoot a movie about the 2008 Olympics." Therefore, when I done, my movie will have been shot in Beijing.

There are a few meaning for the word "shot"
1. Past tense of "shoot" Ex. I shot the sheriff! But I did not shoot the deputy.
2. Past tense participle meaning a bullet hit something in the past. Ex. The sheriff had been shot by me, but the deputy had not been shot by me.
3. Adjective meaning "messed up" My sleeping schedule is shot due to that nap. My immune system is shot because of the weather.
4. Noun meaning sound the gun makes when firing a bullet. Ex. Did you hear that shot? Did someone die?
There are other meanings of the word "shot" but these are the main ones I think you'd hear in a movie. If you give me more context I can help out more!
As for the word references... it is a noun that the dictionary explains better than I can =}
Hope this helps, let me know if you need something said clearer! :)

Shot has more than one meaning.
1) The past tense of shoot (The police shot the thief with his gun)
2) a small glass of alcohol (They are drinking shots at thee bar)
A reference is when someone uses an example from somewhere else.
For example, if someone said a quote from a movie or book, they would be 'referencing it'.
