What is the correct use of the word "cheers"? So I've recently watched some British TV show and I realized they use the word "cheers" a lot and in many different ways. I thought it only meant to be used while having a toast but in the show people used for mean other things, like for example instead of saying "okay", instead of saying "thanks", as another way to say hello and also for indicate that they agree with something. I am a little confused right now, can someone help me? Are others ways to use this word? Thanks! (Or better should I say cheers?? :d)

Not being British I'm no expert, but you've got the right idea. Among Brits the word serves as a general purpose greeting or expression of agreement or good will. It is normally used among friends to say "hello", "goodbye", "that's right", etc. Cheers Alejandro! Ed

The brits specifically use this word in way more contexts than other English countries. In North America, it's only used for toasting. British usages include those mentioned by Ed, as well as even just a way to end an email, instead of sincerely, I've seen "Cheers, XXX".
