about the motions of playing instruments there are 3 kinds of instruments-----strings instrument, winds instrument and percussion instrument. I want to ask how I can express about the motions of playing respective instruments. 1.___guitar pluck or play? 2.___piano play? 3.___drum play? 4.___volin ? 5.___clarinet blow? 6.___harpsichord pluck or play? Thank you!

You can say "play" for any musical instrument. Less-common but specific verbs are: - pluck/strum the guitar - beat the drum(s) - bow on the violin "Blow on the clarinet" suggests that the payer is either very bad or very noisy. However, "blow" is fine for brass instruments and the saxophone. You would never say "pluck" for harpsichord, even though that is how the instrument works. The player actually uses a keyboard; "pluck" suggests the musician is reaching inside the harpsichord and touching the strings directly. I wonder if there's a specific verb for playing the theremin...

You play all of them. You pluck a string. You beat the drum. Don't say "blow". You can blow INTO a clarinet, but you don't blow a clarinet. Only if your boyfriend is a clarinet can you blow it.
