Very difficult problem for native Korean also. At first, 구경하다 includes that someone feels interesting in something. In the case 보다, it has so many meanings. Technically, 보다 can cover 구경하다. So if you have confused when you use, just use 보다. Good luck.

But when you go to somewhere to see something interesting event or go on a shopping, '구경하다'is better than saying '보다'. For example 눈이 엄청쌓였어. 구경가자. It's very heavy snowy.
