If حال means "now" why does حالم بهتر هستم mean I feel better? I am working through a text book and it uses حالم and حالش and I don't quite understand this.

Interesting question. "Now" means "haalaa" or "alaan" in Persian. But in this sentence : " man haalam behtar ast", the word " haalam = haal e man" means "My feeling". So this sentence in English is " My feeling is better"( But idk it is common to say in English! So If it is not, you can say: I feel better! ).

It's as same as present word in English! present has various meaning for example, 1. present = present tense 2. present = gift etc. "حال" has the same situation! 1- as a present tense = now حال / حالا / اکنون 2- mood = feel حالم خوب نیست = I don't feel good or I'm not in a good mood! 3- as a verb especially in The present or past continuous tense I'm working. means " در حال کار کردن هستم"
