"What is the difference between a city and a town?" A city is bigger than a town, but the exact definition is different between countries. In Australia, we don't have villages (in the way that they're commonly understood). We have capital cities, cities, towns and townships. When I was in Slovakia, I saw that pretty much anything that wasn't a village was a town. Bratislava is just called the "principal/main/head town". Explaining the concept of a city was a challenge. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Town Interestingly, both London and Dublin are referred to as "towns" in some English songs. It's just a poetic choice.

A town is smaller than a city. A city is a large important town.

The difference is in population, the city being the larger place. A population center that is larger than a village but smaller than a city is called a town.

Historically, in Britain, it was simply the presence of a cathedral that gave city status. That's still obvious today, because there are some *very* small города know as "the city of...", such as Lichfield, Carlisle, Bath and Durham.
