Many Kindle titles let you download a "free sample" which is usually the whole first chapter. I have the first chapter of several of Mario Vargas Llosa's novels. I also find it helpful to download the first chapter of Spanish translations of works I happen to have read in English--several of George Orwell's novels, for example. I have free sample chapters of Quino's "Mafalda" comic strips. They are quite interesting, and, of course, quite a challenge.
