The methods and approaches of elaboration of Academic writing and speaking skills
Dear readers,
For more than two years I am trying to improve my Academic writing and speaking skills in English and French languages. The main aspects of the Academic discourse are: objectivity, language use and formality. Actually, for the first glance it seems simply, however I faced various difficulties in development of these skills. One of them is strong envie to make my "academic masterpiece" much more poetic and expressive, though I understand that in academic discourse it is not accessible. Due to this, I am obligated to sacrifice the beauty of the speech in order to save the structure, style and objectivity. As a result - I have something not academic, stylistically poor but overwhelmed by fact and scientific evidences without coherent structure and sense of language at all.
Do you have any recommendations how I can elaborate my academic skills in writing and speaking?

Hi Stanislav
I think there is indeed a bit of a conflict in what you are attempting to do.However, the best suggestion I can give is just to expose yourself to many different styles of academic writing, and to try to read good examples of this, not just standard texts. There are many literary writers who are also researchers.Perhaps you could also try to read some of those. One that springs to mind is Oliver Sacks,a medical doctor and psychologist who has also published books which are read by ordinary people even though they are not masters of his field. He writes excellently and clearly in my opinion. Here is an article I just read by him. What do you think?

I don't know if you have to sacrifice beauty for objectivity.I just think it is hard to achieve.

I am not yet a qualified teacher but I am currently learning and helping people informally through Italki. I am interested in writing skills especially because I worked as a lawyer in England for many years and writing was my main means of communication.
Looking at your text, you are obviously an ambitious writer and have done a lot of work to reach your current level. You want to express sophisticated concepts but perhaps you need to go back a level first and become more accurate when writing simpler texts. You made several grammatical mistakes in your text and used some sophisticated words when simpler ones would have made your meaning clearer.
If you want to write elegantly, you need to be more disciplined in using standard collocations and, if you can, get feedback on your texts. If you cannot pay for lessons, you could post texts for correction on notebook here in Italki and ask for feedback on your choice of language. Wishing you the best, Michael

So you will feel something about any ( Dialogue) that you read or hear, or you will feel something about any Story (fiction) that you read or hear.
Most of Academia trains its disciples to presume to be a Neutral Voice, as though the writer is merely an observer of others in conflict; but that will never show you your own "voice" in speaking and writing. To find your own "voice" and your own WORKING VOCABULARY, you must identify your own feelings (and your own ideas) FOR or AGAINST any number of propositions (Arguments / Nonfictions) and Stories (Stories / Fictions.
Of course, to find this "voice" in speaking and writing, you need to study the Fictions (Stories) or the Arguments (Dialogues or Nonfictions) that other people have already published. These Arguments or Stories must be examined and analyzed on the basis of an objective standard. Typically this involves Facts, but it also will involve Logic.

Stanislav, you have gotten some good advice already. I would like to add to that.
The difficulty is that we want to have access to the entire English vocabulary, in order to say what we want to say, and in the way that we want to say it.
To make a long story short, you cannot do this until you have your own vocabulary, a WORKING VOCABULARY that you can use the same way that a carpenter uses old and familiar tools to work with wood.
To get this, you must engage something that most of academia does not tell you about.
You have to engage your personal feeling.
To implement your own feeling and therefore, the specific vocabulary that expresses your feelings, you must know arguments, because all of life and all of human communication can be viewed in either of two contexts
What you see, hear and feel, is either (1) An Argument or (2) A Story

These of course, are only some of the basic endeavours to be engaged.
Unless you intend to write about Literature as one of the fine arts, I think that you can shorten the process of this learning activity by just focusing upon the Nonfiction part of communication. Thus, you can improve quickly by studying the vocabulary used by published authors. Identify with clarity exactly what they write, and how they write.
Borrow what you admire and implement it in your own communications. During this process,
you will need to identify your own assumptions. That is how you will discover your own "voice" and acquire power as a communicator.
