Why did it "crush her heart like a cigarette" ? Something unpleasant was revealed to her, and she said that it crushed her heart like a cigarette. What does it mean - to crush a cigarette?

It's not a standard expression and I have never seen it. It doesn't sound like a good one either, in my opinion. The writer could be referring to when you finish a cigarette and "stub" it out i.e. extinguish the burning stub with downward pressure on an ashtray or other hard surface, which crushes the stub.
