What is the fastest or most effective way to learn Korean? I am really passionate about learning Korean. I'm currently taking a Korean class at my University. Once that class is over though I will have to study by myself. It goes very slowly when I have to do it on my own. So I'm really worried about that. I also really want to be able to hold conversations with my Korean friends. Everyday that I cannot talk with in their language feels rude for me. I know they are kind but I don't want to force them to use my language every time we talk.

My honest recommendation is to just start talking. Set up some language lessons, organize a language exchange, or just talk to your Korean friends about your desire to learn it and ask if they would mind speaking it with you sometime. When you're speaking, from that point on just make sure you never utter a full statement without Korean. My favorite phrase is "한국어로 어떡해 말해요?" ("How do you say in Korean?") Pepper it in whenever you need a word or phrase that you don't know. Examples: 'hello' 한국어로 어떡해 말해요? (Then repeat what they tell you) 'I don't understand' 한국어로 어떡해 말해요? (Then repeat what they tell you) 'I'm taking a Korean class" 한국어로 어떡해 말해요? (Then repeat what they tell you) The key here is to get the conversation flowing in Korean and not need to switch to English. It's the only way I've found myself able to retain vocabulary I need for speaking because it's tailored to what I need to have a conversation. I think the fastest way for you to improve at this stage is all about perspective. You can speak Korean. It may be limited. It may be difficult. But you can do it. If you do nothing but the thing I said above, you will be communicating through Korean, and that is a win. If you communicate using Tarzan Korean-speak, you are still winning. If you communicate in mime with the occasional Korean thrown in, you are still winning. This what I find most effective for me when I start. Get the floundering out of the way early so that you don't have to wait to speak the language. Combine it with some TTMIK and just have fun.

Hello, I have been studying korean too for almost a year, I think the fastest way to learn korean is by learning with a video tutoring. you can search in youtube, plus make some certain question/sentences by yourself and translate it in korean as you can. then if you have a korean friend, or korean tutor, you can ask them whether your sentences are correct. and the last I think, you need to learn it from the "fun" side first such as listen to their song or watch their reality show. rather than learn it formally. it will help you learn and remember the word faster. :) hope it may help.

@mojave I use talk to me in korean's website as well as memrise for my Korean class already. I'll have to check out howtostudykorean. I use the HelloTalk for talking to people in Korean and English already. I like the idea of speaking face to face with another person but I don't believe that I could speak for 30 minutes. Thanks for the advice though.

http://www.talktomeinkorean.com/ and http://www.howtostudykorean.com/ have amazing lessons! They are a must. I would also suggest using https://www.memrise.com/ for studying vocabulary. They have tons of very good vocab courses - also a must, in my book. Finally, find a Korean who is learning English and do regular get-togethers where you speak 30min in Korean, 30min in English. If your Korean friends are not in your neighborhood, you can also find people online that want to trade language learning.
