How can I use verbs which are followed by verb + ing or to + verb? I'm confused.. I can't identify the differents between to use verbs which are followed by verb + to or ing + verb.. My English teacher told me this example: -I didn't expect to get the job (She told me this is the right way) -I didn't expect getting the jog (She told me this the wrong way, I can't use this) But I can't see the differents.. Can you explain me, please?

To add to Su.Ki's advice, there is : a) a limited number of verbs which must be followed by the infinitive, and b) a limited number which can be followed by either the infinitive or the gerund. The great majority of verbs must be followed by the gerund. So part of your work on this topic could include studying the list of verbs in categories a) and b) - see http://www.englishpage.com/gerunds/part_1.htm

I didn't expect to get the job - Right I didn't expect getting the job - Wrong I know that this doesn't sound very helpful, Paulina, but the difference between these two sentences is simply that the first is right, and the second is not. You just cannot say 'I didn't expect getting'. It isn't 'different' - it's simply wrong. Forget about it! This sentence doesn't exist in correct English. So, what should you do? Two pieces of advice: - Don't try to translate sentences word-for-word from Spanish, and don't try to apply the rules of Spanish grammar to English. - Learn short phrases in English. Try to 'think' in English. Accept that the correct construction is 'expect to get', and then practise with other similar phrases, for example 'I didn't expect to get the prize' 'I didn't expect to win the race.' 'I didn't expect to see you here.' and so on, until the expression seems natural to you. That's the way we learn our mother tongue, and that's the best way to learn a foreign language - by accepting and practising.
