When do you use the phrase " to step up to the plate" ?
The sentence is from a text from BBC " they were just regular passengers this afternoon, who stepped up to the plate as soon as they saw what was happening".
It's a baseball analogy and means to assume responsibility or leadership often in a crisis or difficult situation. It is a bit of a cliche too.
