"visceral understanding" Does "visceral understanding" here mean "inner and deep understanding" or "clinical and biologic understanding"? I think that "inner understanding" should be true. Am I right? "The eventual work has been realised as an installation in which viewers wander contemplating different soundtracks and abstract visual images – of cell structures and landscapes, casts, drawing and writings – ‘those’ they write, ‘which seem to have an equivalence with the visceral understanding of the disease’."Reference: https://books.google.com/books?id=iiE3RsvK248C&pg;=PA150&lpg;=PA150&dq;="The+eventual+work+has+been+realised+as+an+installation+in+which+"&source;=bl&ots;=Cu2-qlBgq8&sig;=MfCIXaBxCPXsOSKrTeygOWmULX4&hl;=en&sa;=X&ved;=0CB4Q6AEwAGoVChMIieWltt2myAIVyPJyCh0TgQ-4#v=onepage&q;=%22The%20eventual%20work%20has%20been%20realised%20as%20an%20installation%20in%20which%20%22&f;=false

Hello Pineapple, This is a rather deep question with the context but as far as I can discover, a visceral understanding is connected with instant emotions rather than the brain. http://freethoughtblogs.com/singham/2012/07/31/cerebral-and-visceral-reactions/

This style of writing is almost a little too baroque for me. Visceral means of "the gut." How they internalise the feelings from whatever conceptualisation of the known pathology is to them.
