So vs. Posso Ciao! I wonder if "So parlare un po' di italiano." and "Posso parlare un po' di italiano." are both correct. What is the difference between "so" and "posso"?

Hello!I will try to explain also my english is very bad.. :-) "SO parlare un pò di italiano" Usually in italian we say "parlo un pò di italiano" so "I speak a bit of italian" "POSSO parlare un pò di italiano" In this case I think that the word "POSSO" mean "sono in grado" so in english "I can" SO---I know POSSO---I can I hope I have been helpful.Bye.

Hi Sef, the two sentences are both correct but the easiet way to say you can speak Italian just a little is "Parlo un po' di italiano". SO PARLARE I can speak POSSO PARLARE I'm able to speak

To complicate matters, /potere/ especially in interrogative forms is often used with the meaning of /avere la volonta` di fare qualcosa/ (Eng.: to be willing of doing something/. I suggest the Asker to repeat the question and to wait for many necessary examples to shed light on these various meanings.

In Italian /potere/ is used BOTH for capability AND for permission, sometimes (but seldom) leading to ambiguity in meaning. /sapere/ is MOSTLY used for knowledge, but ALSO for capability (being able to do something), but never for permission. So there exists a big overlap of meaning shared by these two verbs: sapere, potere.
