To use or not to use the suffix '-san' 'San(さん)' is a polite title in Japanese. In English it is sometimes used as a suffix to a family or personal name, such as 'Yamada-san' or 'Ken-san'. I'm really happy to know some people try to know our culture and language and show their interest by using in that way, but I guess that the word '-san' is still a foreign word, even though the Oxford English Dictionary and the Random House Dictionary have already picked it up in them. Although native English speakers know how to use such a foreign word naturally, I don't think it is a good idea to use '-san' between Japanese people. I'd be happy to know what you think about this issue.

I am learning Japanese, and call all my I-talki language partners by their given name, followed by さん。 They in turn, call me Hilary-san. I would be quite happy for them to just call me 'Hilary', but I realise that is not the Japanese way. I don't understand your comment " I don't think it is a good idea to use '-san' between Japanese people. " You are Japanese - this form of address is part of your culture and your language - why do you think Japanese people shouldn't use it when speaking to each other? And secondly, this topic really isn't about learning English, so should properly be on the "Discussions' page.
