José Rodrigues dos Santos is a great author. He is like the "portuguese version of Dan Brown" due to similarity of the plot (they both write novels with an historic background). So if they are into those kind of books they will love José Rodrigues dos Santos! The only problem is that, like Dan Brown, his books are a little bit long, specially for beginners.

For non-advanced learners, Paulo Coelho's books are definity a great choice.
The plots are very easy to follow, vocabulary is simple, no big literary figures of speech and so on.

Hi, Alberto!
Usually, 'traditional' books can be found in the form of adapted versions for kids and younger teenagers. When I was younger, for example, I read many books by Jules Verne and Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes), which have their vocabulary modified in order to make its comprehension easier. Books of Brazilian classical Literature have also been adapted to cover this younger public and can also be of great help and entertainment for non-native speakers/readers of Portuguese.
Then you just need to google something like: "...Book's Title (in Portuguese)..., de ... Author... versão adaptada". Eg.: 'Senhora, de José de Alencar versão adaptada', and see what you get. This way you can choose from a wider variety of genres. If you want original books, you can follow our colleagues' advice, I have nothing in mind...
Good luck to you and your friends on your studies and have fun reading amazing books!

Do a search for lelivros.online. It's a Brazilian website and you can download books in pdf, epub, or mobi (amazon kindle) format. All the books I've found have been free.
I bought a kindle to read books in Portuguese and it's been worth it to me. Once I downloaded a book in Portuguese, it automatically downloaded a Portuguese-English dictionary. If I want to look up a word, I just highlight it on the touch screen and it looks it up. Also, it's much easier to read text on an e-reader than on a notebook or laptop.
Book reviews: search for skoob.com.br It's a Brazilian online bookstore. I like the way their reviews are set up. It's easy to follow what books a particular person has liked. So let's say I find I like books you've liked - I read more of them. For any book, some people will like it and others won't. I like Skoob's system better than Amazon's star system.
OK, to answer the original question: what books have I been reading?
O Hobbit: It helped that I'd already read it in English - I liked it even though I've read it before
A Chave de Rebecca (Ken Follet) - I liked it - actually, I couldn't put it down
O Alquimista (Paolo Coelho) - I liked it - I found this one to be the easiest to read
1356 (Bernard Cornwell) - I liked it
Livro do Desassossego (Fernando Pessoa) - I didn't like it - I couldn't get past the first few pages
Tróia (Cláudui Moreno) - I like it
Tropa de Elite (Luiz Eduardo Soares) - First of all, I saw the movie sub-titled in English and I liked it.
The book- I read the first half of it and basically I liked it but it was the most difficult to read because of all the slang. Most of the words I try to look up aren't in the Portuguese-English Dictionary. What I'm going to do is read an English translation and then re-read it in Portuguese.
