What does the speaker mean by saying "I didn't think so"? Hi guys, This is an exchange from a novel. Could you please help me understand 'I didn't think so' said at the end? "No, she did not send me here. I sent myself." "I don't understand." "She stayed with me at first, but she missed him. It made her unhappy... so I decided it was time to spend some quality time with Charlie." "But now you're unhappy." "And?" "That doesn't seem fair." "Hasn't anyone ever told you? Life isn't fair." "I believe I have heard that somewhere before." "So that's all." "You put on a good show. But I'd be willing to bet that you're suffering more than you let anyone see. Am I wrong? I didn't think so."

By that point in the conversation, the speaker (Edward) has seen something in Bella's (I think that's the other character in this scene... It's been a long time since I read this book) behavior that confirms his suspicion that she is suffering more than she allows others to see. He sees the answer to his question: Am I wrong?

Hi Sonia - Its an expression of confidence or victory or doubt against someone. To say "I didn't think so" means "I know I'm right" Example : Two men sitting down at a bar get into a verbal fight. They stand and one man realizes the other is much larger and more powerful than him. The powerful man might say "Yea, I didn't think so!" (as the weaker man slowly sits down) meaning "yea, I knew you weren't going to be able to fight me! Go ahead and take a seat" Its just an abbreviated way of expressing "I knew" or confidence or doubt in your favor Hoping this helped! I use this phrase probably a few times a year.
