was/were? I was walking down a dark street late in the evening when I heard loud cries coming from behind a bush. Surprised, I slowed down to listen, and realized that what I was hearing _was/were_ the unmistakable sounds of a struggle: heavy grunting, frantic fight, and tearing of clothes. Which word should I use in this sentence? Was or were? Thank you.

You used the word "sounds", which is plural, so it is "were". It should be "frantic fighting", by the way :)
