Difference between “c” “ch” & “ts”? Recently I was confused that there are several kinds of expression in “陳”, like “can4”, “chan4”, “tsan4”, “chàhn”. Can anyone tell me about it? 用廣東話同我解釋都可以 :-)

Commonly there are a few systems to pronounce Cantonese. It is quite confused because I know there is only one for Mandarin( the pinyin/漢語拼音). I would like to introduce the systems I know to you.As a Cantonese native speaker, I think the most difficult part to learn this language is learners could hardly find a pronunciation system which perfectly matches the Cantonese we speak today. Most of us learnt it by imitating our parents when we were young. 1. Wade–Giles system(Ch'en). It is a Romaji Schemes that China used in the early years. Words like kungfu(功夫), I Ching(易經), Chingming Festival(清明節),Taiji(太極) are examples of this system. Taiwan is using this system and it shows in its cities‘ names like Taipei. Personally I guess this system is invented for foreigners to read easily 2.Jyutping Scheme(can4). This is the one I recommend the most. It is considered to be the one with the closest pronunciation to Cantonese 3.Hong Kong Government Cantonese Romanisation(Chan). This is the system hk uses today. And Canton city used it before 1949 as well. I don't really like it because I think it is more like Enlglish. My younger sister speaks English most of the time and this makes her confused. Even sometimes she speaks Cantonese to me, she would go like:"家姐,我哋今日係唔係要Tsim Sha Tsu(尖沙咀)啊?“ This is the official English name written in the metro and she thinks it is the Cantonese. Some stations use completely English name like Causeway Bay(銅鑼灣),but the rest just imitate the English pronunciation 3.Pe̍h-ōe-jī、POJ(白話字/教會拼音)(tân) 4.Yale Romanization(chàhn). Invented by Yale University to help American soldiers speak East Asian languages easier 5.黃錫凌拼音(tsan), it is a Cantonese expert from Canton city. You could read his book《粵音韻彙》if you are interested in this system *Some of those systems are also used to pronounce Hokkien ,閩南話 and other languages, not just Cantonese Some of the ethnic Chinese from Southeast Asia would write 陳 as chin or ching 最後,我只是個愛好粵語的中學生,中英文皆差如有錯誤請海涵糾正謝謝。

我學廣東話。I think in 普通話 it would be: 我和 Victoria 同意; maybe in 廣東話 it is 我同 Victoria 同意. Not sure... I agree with Victoria that Jyutping 粵語拼音/粵拼 is preferable. For me it is preferable because 粵拼 is what I see as the most standardized method for learning 廣東話. The majority of resources that I have found use 粵拼 .
