Ello o Ella
Sometimes in sentences I see "ello" or "ella" but the sentence wasn't about a person. Is this sometimes as "it" would be in English? And if so, how do you know when to use that instead of "lo" or "la"?

Él is for masculine , ella for feminine and ello ('it' in english) it's a personal pronoun with neutral gender referring to other parts of a sentence, not people (without gender). Can be changed by 'eso' (that)
Here's an example:
-Tenía que revisar los tanques de oxígeno, ¡La vida de él dependía de ello! (ello - pronoun : revisar los tanques de oxígeno)
-Me siento mal , por ello voy a cambiar de trabajo (ello - pronoun: me siento mal)
'Lo/Los , La/Las' refer to the direct object of a sentence not the subject :
- Quiero un perro -> Lo quiero (Lo = un perro, masculine singular, direct object)
-Dame tu carpeta -> Dámela (La = la carpeta, feminine singular , direct object), in some cases it goes at the end of the verb.
-Quiero los perros > Los quiero (Los = los perros, masculine plural, direct object)
-Compro unas botellas -> Las compro (Las = las botellas, feminine plural, direct object)
---------------------------------------------------------- Singular---- Plural
1.ª persona(yo, nosotros/as)--------------- me--------- nos
2.ª persona(tú, vosotros/as)------------------ te---------- os
3.ª persona( él/ella/ello , ellos/ellas) -- lo, la-------los, las
Hope this helps you understand , tell me if you don't understand something.

Ella/ Ello is the noun and La/Lo is the article. It would be better if you write the sentence where you see it, at first glance I don't really understand your point, you know so I can give you a better explanation
