厕所,卫生间,洗手间 and 电梯
Hi,
I understand that the three words (厕所,卫生间,洗手间) mean the same thing but I wanted to know which word(s) native speakers are more likely to choose to use depending on the situation.
Scenario 1: If you are outside going about your day and suddenly need to use the restroom. Let's say you were walking in a 公园 or a 广场, which of the three words would you use?
Scenario 2: You are at a restaurant 餐厅 or at your office 办公室. Which word would you use?
Scenario 3: You are visiting a friend 朋友 or your next door neighbor 邻居 and would like to use their bathroom. Which word do you use?
----------------------------------------------
*I learned that 电梯 can mean both escalator or elevator but to me they're very different things... Is there a way of differentiating the two in Chinese??
Thank you.

厕所:colloquial but a little incivilization
卫生间 洗手间:polite saying 。always used in advanced place

厕所 = toilet 卫生间 (literally hygenic room) ,洗手间 (washroom). In English, we also have "powder room," (used by women as a euphemism to reapply their makeup) Like in English, it all depends on who you are with. With family and close friends, you
don't have to overtly polite. 电梯 = elevator, escalator = 电扶梯, 自动扶梯, 电/自动/平梯 etc.

Using洗手间and卫生间 would be more polite than using 厕所, so for those scenarios , which one would be used depends on whom you talk to , if you tell your close friends that you need to use bathroom , you could use whatever you prefer, if it's strangers or someone you dont know well, 卫生间and洗手间would be more proper.
电梯means escalator and elevator, but escalator 电梯,is short for 手扶电梯/扶手电梯,so you can differentiate them based on different contexts.

Used 卫生间,洗手间at city people's.used 厕所at county people's.
电梯elevator:一般指垂直上下的,如:公寓电梯,写字楼电梯,观光电梯,消防电梯,工作电梯(施工电梯)。商场、超市、机场不是垂直的一般是自动扶梯escalator。
