Recover = get something physical back (like jewellery) Regain = get something not physical back (like your health, your balance, your trust)

From a strictly dictionary definition in your context there is no difference, but I think recover the stolen goods/items is the more common term at least in UK English for a police/crime scenario. They both mean returning something to it's original state or owner. we say putting a patient into the recovery position, never "into a regain position" we can say the patient has regained his health or recovered back to full health. "we expected the patient to regain/ recover their health after 2 months rehabilitation and therapy" There are only a very few situations when we would use or prefer one word over the other.

There are a lot of good answers here, but I also wanted to add that "recover" can be an intransitive verb, whereas "regain" cannot. Used this way, it doesn't follow Harry's excellent summary.
