Recover = get something physical back (like jewellery)
Regain = get something not physical back (like your health, your balance, your trust)

From a strictly dictionary definition in your context there is no difference, but I think recover the stolen goods/items is the more common term at least in UK English for a police/crime scenario. They both mean returning something to it's original state or owner.
we say putting a patient into the recovery position, never "into a regain position"
we can say the patient has regained his health or recovered back to full health.
"we expected the patient to regain/ recover their health after 2 months rehabilitation and therapy"
There are only a very few situations when we would use or prefer one word over the other.

There are a lot of good answers here, but I also wanted to add that "recover" can be an intransitive verb, whereas "regain" cannot. Used this way, it doesn't follow Harry's excellent summary.
In the emergency room. "How bad is it, Doc?"
"You'll recover."
"Apple made a blunder with their latest release."
"I'm not worried. They'll recover."
"Their marriage never recovered from her affair."
