MA questions. Any one who can explain the grammatical point ? Q1: For centuries, cats have guarded this famous museum, ridding it of mice, rats, and other rodents that could damage the art, not to mention.....off visitors. 1)that of scaring 2)scaring 3)scare 4)having scared Answer key: Choice 3. I don't know why '2' cannot be possible. I know the parallel structure and we have to have the same grammatical structure before and after 'coordinating conjunction' so why not because of 'RIDDING' I can select 'SCARING' when in this case it is parallel? Q2:Most historians trace the beginning of the Internet to Sputnik, the first satelite...... 1)to successfully orbit the earth 2)orbited the earth successfully Answer key: choice '1'. WHY not '2'? I would complete the blank as : 'which was the first satelite orbitted the earth successfully' then I reduce the adjective clause and that will become choice '2' so what's wrong with it? Thanks in advance <3

1 - "scare" is related to rodents thus it's parallel with "damage". 2 - if you pick 2 it'll be past indefinite sentence with "the first satellite" as the subject but your choice must be a subordinate clause.

More detail as to why your "adjective clause" is wrong in (2). 'which was the first satellite orbited the earth successfully' => wrong because "that" is missing after "satellite". which was the first satellite THAT orbited the earth successfully => CORRECT. "that" as a relative pronoun is often omitted, but not when it functions as the subject of the relative clause. - He is one THAT can do the job. (subject "that" - cannot be omitted - no exception) - He is one (that) no one can beat. (object "that" (of "beat") is usually left out) - Don't become the kind of fool (that) he is? (complement "that" (of "is") is often left out)

1. Could damage, could scare

No 1. You are correct in choosing answer 2 scaring. Sometimes the answer keys just get it wrong. No 2. For 2 to be correct you would need to include the word that "that orbited the earth successfully".

Q1 is about the end of the sentence and how to read/interpret it "not to mention" Q2 is about linking tracing the beginnings of the internet, not about the grammar involved concerning the first satellite called "sputnik".
