Hi, you just need to smile when starting a simple conversation wherever you are. For example; It's a lovely day today isn't it? or I hope this rain doesn't last too long? or What time does the next train arrive? Practise saying similar sentences and thank you daily and it won't seem so hard to make friends with a foreigner. Last of all you could get a job at a hotel so you can practise your English daily talking to foreigners.

The problem is not only the language barrier, it also involving custom. For example, some foreigners greeting each other with hugs and/or a kiss. Would you accept that? If you are comfortable with your own folks, make friends with them. Choose those foreigners who are interested in learning Chinese Language and Culture. So, they will do to your way, not theirs. Look at the profile of each individual, to find the right person for you. I have learned their customs, there are no foreigners for me. Ladies, you are wellcome to greet me with hugs and kisses. Men, I will hand shake with you, that is our custom.

Hello Lois, The barrier you have is mainly the language. Try to improve your English so you find it much easier to communicate with foreigners of many nationalities ,since many do speak English and very few on the other hand speak Chinese. Good luck:)

if you want to learn english then make friendship woth english speak foreign friends~ have confidence! and keep smile on face! in italki you can click on "language partners" on left hand side upper corner to find some friends! and i am also foreigner in china yet i will say be carefull also!
