A tree fell in the forest.
The tree fell onto the trail.
There were a lot of fallen trees on the trail, and I nearly tripped over them and fell when I was hiking.
---------
I chose "onto" instead of "on" because "onto" implies movement. "Onto" works better with the action verb "to fall."
After the tree is already on the ground, I would say it was on the trail.
