What's the difference between 'something of the sort' and 'the sort of something'?

In English, we don't say "the sort of something."
We say "the sort of thing." = "the type of thing" = "the kind of thing"
("Did you hear that the ghost of a murderer lives in this house?"
"Aaaah! Don't say that! That's the sort of thing that scares me!")
"Something of the sort." = "something like that" Normally used when you are replying to someone.
("Did you hear that the ghost of a murderer lives in this house?"
"Yeah, I heard something of the sort. People like to spread rumours.")

Hello!
"of the sort" would mean "like that" or "similar too".
"the sort of" means "of that kind" or "in that manner"
So these two phrases are very similar.
