"Funny you should ask" is the same as "It's interesting that you ask that now" because something incidentally (and possibly unbelievable) is pertaining to whatever it is you're talking about. Sometimes in some situations, it's so coincidental that there could be doubt that it's real. "Funny" in these cases is not meant to be comical, but strangely interesting, given the timing of something. It can be used for other examples: "It's funny that he began dating a nurse right before he had his surgery." (This means the timing was excellent.) "It's funny how every time I ask you to do the dishes that you seem to be busy." (This means that something habitually happens, but it's not very believable to the speaker.) You might notice that in some arguments, one person will innocently use this phrase toward someone when talking about something rather serious, and another person will sharply point out "there's nothing funny about it!" to be a bit patronizing about their language choice. They certainly *know it's not funny*, as in comical, but it's a bit of a high-handed way to respond to someone to cut their point down. Example: Person 1: "It's funny that she got sick because she's always so careful about washing her hands and keeping everything in the house sterile." Person 2: "There's nothing funny about it! She's probably going to need to go to the hospital!" When we use the word "funny" we have to be careful *when* we use it, and who we say it to because of the tie-in with the notion that something is comical. In conversation, we absolutely know that shortcomings and bad situations are *not comical*, but innocently saying "it's funny that..." can lead to more upset from some people who don't care to hear the word "funny" at all if they are sensitive about how language is making the situation out to be comical, when it's not. As for other people, they understand that the word is not meant to be taken literally.

"Funny you should ask" is an expression used when something coincidental happens. Example you are speaking to a friend and he happened to ask how your family is doing. Then you say something like "Funny you should ask, my mommy has been asking of you, she says it's been a while you came to the house."
