How would you interpret this poem written by Rabindranath Tagore? It is as follows: Life finds its wealth by the claims of the world, and its worth by the claims of love. How would you interpret “by the claims of the world” and “by the claims of love”? Does it mean life finds its wealth by meeting the claims of the world, and its worth by meeting the claims of love? Or does it mean life finds its wealth by it’s claims of the world, and its worth by it’s claims of the love? Thank you.

The world (or living on the earth) demands/claims things from us. We need food and shelter and many other things. To meet those needs we work to pay for those things, and others work to sell us those things. This activity creates wealth. So, wealth comes from the claims of the world. Love demands/claims other things from us; to be kind, affectionate, thoughtful, protective and caring. These are the things that give life value/worth.

Wealth comes from worldly things like material possessions. What really makes life worth living is to have loved and to have been loved.
