Students of English realize very early on in their learning career that prepositions present a problem. They collocate with nouns. adjectives. past participles, and verbs, without rules or logic. Students simply have to learn that "interested" is followed by "in", and "good" is followed by "at". and "go home" has no preposition. Multi-word verbs, or phrasal verbs as they are often referred to, present a very special problem. English can make verb and particle (preposition or adverb) combinations easily and freely. Multi-word verbs exist throughout the language. They express everyday actions such as "Turn on the light": they can also have a variety of meanings such as "Things worked out well. We worked out the problem. She worked out in the gym, I've never been able to work him out. and The find price works out at f 10". Multi-word verbs are a vital component of English, and spoken English in particular. Sometimes you can avoid using phrasal verbs substituting them by simple verbs. For example "to work out" - 1)to solve ; 2) to train ,etc As for the other prepositions which cannot be omited prepositions of time http://www.englisch-hilfen.de/en/grammar/preposition_time.htm prepositions of place and direction "in, at, on" http://www.englisch-hilfen.de/en/grammar/preposition_in_at_on.htm prepositions of place and direction http://www.englisch-hilfen.de/en/grammar/prepositions_place.htm

How can you learn all those? It is a matter of time and practice .The more you practice them ,the more you will be able to memorize them and apply them correctly in sentences. It is a gradual process to be able to master most of them. Some ways of achieving this is as follows: 1-You have to keep practicing them in the context of any readable text ,whether article , comprehension texts , books etc... 2- You can check the above mentioned lists and keep reading them ,understanding their meanings and using them in forming sentences. 3- Use grammar books and exercises to practice preposition exercises where you fill the blanks and choose between different prepositions, which helps you distinguish them and memorize them better on the long run. Here some online grammar exercises with prepositions : www.better-english.com/grammar/prepositions.htm www.agendaweb.org/grammar/prepositions.html www.englishpage.com/grammar/Prepositions/Exercises Exercises with "phrasal verbs": www.churchillhouse.com/english/exercises/phrasals/ www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/grammar/phrasal-verbs www.wordpower.ws/grammar/gramex27.html 4- Speak with native speakers and practice English a lot to be constantly exposed to using the prepositions . If you are confused about certain prepositions in particular you can contact me :)

Hello closetoyou, No , I am sorry to tell you that there is no way to avoid using prepositions when building sentences in English :) The following is the list of the 70 commonly used prepositions in English ( there are more than 100) in an alphabetical order. http://www.englishclub.com/grammar/prepositions-list.htm The problem is that some prepositions have more than one meaning and some change their meanings in certain context or are used in combination with other words to form 'expressions', that serve as modifiers for the preposition's sense. The phrasal verbs ( a verb + a preposition ) are an example of the prepositions loosing their primary sense and being part of the definition of a verb called "phrasal verb". Check a list of alphabetically ordered phrasal verbs with their meanings : http://www.usingenglish.com/reference/phrasal-verbs/ All that confuses of course . Take the preposition 'in' for example: IN the bag , IN the room ( here it means inside ) IN the morning ( here it has a meaning associated with the whole expression and it doesn't mean "inside"). to fill IN ( here it is a part of a phrasal verb ,where the whole verb means to complete a form or substitute someone at work). So you are basically faced with 70 -100 prepositions multiplied in their number and having quite different applications and meanings.
