I agree with what Ms. Help said, but not all the people fill out their personal profile, so it's kind of hard to know their interests. You can began by introducing yourself and telling them what kind of things you like and then asking them what they like.
For example, you say, "What are your hobbies?" "What kind of music do you listen to?"
"Do you like any sports?" and etc.

I think maybe you can start with the personal profile of your foreign friends. You will what she/he likes and dislikes. It is easier when you know someone better. If they like football, maybe you can discuss something about football. If you are interested in Music, chatting about music stars would be a good option.
