When I read the character 长, how can I tell if 长 should be said chang or zhang? When I read the character , how can I tell if 长 should be said chang or zhang? Just as an after thought can I ask the question like this? 当我读汉字长时,我怎么能确定如果应该说chang或zhang?..If its wrong please can you tell me how to say it?

when u use it as an adj. u should read it as chang,it means something is long,for instance,这个绳子好长啊.And if u use it as a verb.u should read it as zhang,it means something or someone grow up.for instance, 他长高了 or 庄稼长高了

长 by itself have two different meanings. It can be distinquished by pronounciation and in writing where it is combined with another word(s) 长【cháng】Meaning: long; length; of long duration; steadily; regularly; strong point; forte. 长【zhǎng】Meaning: older; elder; senior; eldest; oldest; chief; head; grow; develop; cone into; being to grow; from; acquire; enhance; increase.

长: chang:u can take it as adj. like "chang 长的" e.g.长发=长的发(long hair ) zhang:u can take it as verb. e.g.长头发=growing hair so..choose the right pronounce by its function. hope it's helpful.

长【zhǎng】:This pronounciation means grew. eg:我长(zhang)大了。=i grown up. 长【cháng】:This pronounciation means long. eg:看,她舌头真长(chang)!=Look, her tongue's long=She likes telling anything out what she heard.
