一人称の使用...Which should I use? Is "boku" too childish?Why?

Well, yes or no. As you may know, "I" for formal situations is "watashi." If you use "boku" where formality is required, then it'd sound childish because children are allowed not to know how to behave formally. Otherwise, using "boku" is no problem.

at first, there isn't "person 人称" in japanese grammar. Because we don't have a conjugation. Person, as a grammer is for europine language. then, your question. We don't use 僕/boku in formal or official situation. It's for private only. We use this word as indicating children, like 「boku no onamae wa? / What is your name, boy?」 Sometimes it sounds youthfulness or adolescence. People of younger generation Etymologically, 僕 means a male servant.
