Robert
What does '的话' mean when it's used at the end of a sentence? I hear many sentences in Chinese that end in '的话' but I don't understand what this means by itself or how it affects the rest of the sentence, if at all.

First, the "...的话" isn't equal to "one's words or 's words". 如:老师说的话,重要的话... Robert's question "...的话" refers to a kind of meaningless suffix in Chinese, it is often used in oral communication. you can change the sentence to If-clause. example: 你去的话,告诉我一声。=(如果你去,告诉我一声) 没有的话,就不买了。=(如果没有,就不买了)

Hello Robert, 的话 means 'if' . 如 果 没 有 问 题 的 话 , 会 就 开 到 这 儿 。 If there are no questions, we can end the meeting here. 见 到 她 的 话 , 替 我 问 好 。 Please give her my regards if you see her As you see, it is placed at the end of the clause, however it gives exactly the meaning of the English 'if' in sort of a reverse built sentence, what marks many of the Chinese sentence structures.

”的话“一般只出现在口语中的"条件语句"(if..else)里("如果/要是....的话"),可以有可无(it's optional),去掉也不会影响句意。 Moreover, if they were alive today, the Framers might well have supported an amendment to the Copyright Clause. 此外,如果制订者活到今天的话,他们可能会支持对著作权条款进行修订。 =此外,如果制订者活到今天,他们可能会支持对著作权条款进行修订。

"的话"is usually used in hypothetical sentences. For example “if you come to my house,I will be very glad”this sentence means"如果你能来我家的话,我将会很高兴" Usually,"的话"could be canceled in such sentences. and the meaning of sentence is not changed. 如果你能来我家,我将会很高兴 = 如果你能来我家的话,我将会很高兴
