Yes, there's huge regional differences - "dog/dawg" is used the same as friend/pal/mate/buddy, but used in only a couple of places in the US. I suppose pop culture has made it more well-known, but if you said this in Australia (for example) we would understand but we'd also think you were making a joke.

In Canada it's an insult :P Unless you say "You're mah dawg" Then It's "Gangster" for "You're my friend"
