Hi Gabrielle. it's important to look at the whole epic poem, not just a few lines. Milton's purpose in writing the epic was to explain the biblical story of Adam and Eve. Although the epic is similar to the Bible story in many ways, Milton's character structure differs from that of the Bible's version. All through out the epic Milton describes the characters in the way he believes they are. In book II of Paradise Lost, Milton portrays Satan as a rebel who exhibits certain heroic qualities, but who turns out not to be a hero. In this quote Milton is talking about the power of the mind.

It's philosophy. It refers to the nature of space and time, which is a projection of the mind. If the mind can free itself from the demands of space an time, it will find heaven.

Literarily? That's poem man... so, you know... Literally? And then what's the problem? Changed, Heaven. Human mind is deep and way too complicated for me to explore, I'm trying to meet Freud these days, his claims are too abstract for me. I like this: the mind is in it own. A rather attractive philosophical thought to me.
