神情 = the appearance as a result of the state of the 神.
神 is a Daoist, Chinese medical term referring to the spirit that guides you through your life. In modern New Age literature it is referred to as the 8th chakra.

Simply speaking, 表情is facial expression, like smile.... it can cover his/her real psychological activity...Sb is smiling doesn't mean he/she's happy.
神情 is something easily exposed in one's eyes, which can be hardly covered unless he/she's a super liar.
So if he pretended not having stolen the purse(looks calm), but his 神情 betrayed his nervousness.

表情: you can see it directly from one's face.
神情(神态+表情):神态is kind of one's spirit. for instance: sometimes, you can tell that a person is nervous or sad or lost his mind ,even he has no signaficant 表情on his face ,that's 神情.
so 神情 is kind of feeling that you get from a whole person ,not just his face~~~
hope this is helpfull~~~
