Community-TutorHow to Feel More Confident When Speaking a New Language (Including Amharic!)
Post:
Hi everyone! đ
Iâm Tsion, an Amharic tutor who loves helping learners feel confident and enjoy the process of learning new languages.
I know how difficult it can be when you want to speak but your mind goes blank, or when you feel nervous about making mistakes â especially when learning Amharic, which can sound very different from other languages.
Here are a few tips that have helped my students (and even me!) feel braver and more fluent when speaking: đŹ
1ïžâŁ Donât wait to be perfect.
You donât need to know every word before you speak. Fluency grows from practice, not from fear of mistakes. Many Amharic learners improve faster when they stop worrying and just try.
2ïžâŁ Think in your target language.
If youâre learning Amharic, try simple daily thoughts like âáááą á„áááááâ (I want food) or âá„áŁáá
á áá°áá á°áááâ (Please say it again).
If youâre learning English, do the same â replace small daily thoughts in your first language with English words.
3ïžâŁ Record yourself speaking.
It might feel strange, but itâs one of the fastest ways to improve. I often ask my students to record one short video speaking Amharic every week. They always notice progress in pronunciation and confidence!
4ïžâŁ Laugh at your mistakes.
Every mistake means youâre learning. Even native Amharic speakers make errors sometimes â so donât be afraid to try. đ
5ïžâŁ Celebrate small wins.
If youâve learned how to greet someone in Amharic (âSelam!â) or introduce yourself, thatâs a great step! Each small achievement builds your confidence. đ
Learning a language is not about being perfect â itâs about being brave.
Every time you speak, youâre becoming stronger, smarter, and more fluent.
đ What helps you feel more confident when speaking?
đ If youâre learning Amharic, what words or expressions are your favorites so far?
Letâs support each other and keep growing together! đ
