Dear Web Italki Friends I have a lot of [concentration problems] (could also say: difficulty concentrating) and I can't understand the material properly, no matter how hard I try to concentrate. I can't understand anything, I lose concentration very easily and that makes my learning difficult What should I do?
Is this something that happens regardless of what subject you are learning? Is it in a classroom context or another context? Does this happen when you are listening to information and reading information? Is it happening in for languages that you are learning or languages that you are fluent in?If this happens when you're trying to pay attention to anything in general it might be worth talking to a counsellor because that could be a sign of burnout, ADHD or something else. Here are some things that might be helpful. 1. Change your environment (e.g. if you know sitting behind people is distracting to ask to sit near the front). 2. Find something to fidget with (e.g. some string, something malleable, doodling) or remove things that you tend to fidget with. Ssome people find it easier to concetrate while fidgeting, others do not and this is something to experiment with if you don't know about yourself. 3. Keep paper to write down what you are listening or reading about. This can help to engage your brain in a different way. You might also write down thoughts that are distracting you while you are trying to concentrate--if you've written it down then it is somewhere out of your brain so you it can be easier to think about it later since you have a reminder. Alternatively, before you need to concentrate, write down all the things that are bothering you (anxiety, things you keep reminding yourself to do) so that you've dumped them out of your brain and hopefully the thoughts will be quieter while you are trying to concentrate. 4. Try giving yourself a task. This can be helpful in general but is especially helpful when listening to information in a second language that you are just beginning to learn (e.g. how many times do I hear X word used? Can I list 3 big ideas from the class?). 5. Ask if you can audio-record the learning material so that you can go back to it later. This has been especially helpful for me.
